Crawford - the light-skinned Negro man from Pittsburgh - was a complete stranger. And a Northerner. But Crawford had come to their black fraternal group's district meeting and picnic with C.D. Haslerig, who was a prosperous dairy farmer and one of the leading black citizens in the rural northern Georgia cotton mill town.
